What it's for

BPC-157 is a lab-made chain of 15 amino acids based on a fragment linked to "body protection compound" research from stomach juices. It is popular in research and wellness talk, but it is not an approved medicine.

What it does for the body

Most of what we know comes from animal studies of tendon, muscle, gut, and soft-tissue injury. It is not FDA-approved to treat any human disease. Products sold as "research chemicals" can vary a lot in quality and are not the same as an approved drug.

What it targets

In early lab and animal papers, researchers suggest it may gently adjust growth-factor signals (including pathways tied to new blood-vessel growth) and nitric-oxide pathways during repair. A simple picture: giving the repair crew clearer marching orders — still experimental, not proven like an approved drug.

Research context

Most published work is early lab and animal (cells and animals). Human evidence is sparse. Recent systematic reviews did not identify a large randomly assigned controlled trial establishing safety and effectiveness in people. Literature-reported experimental ranges in animal models vary widely by species, route, and injury model — these are research observations, not instructions for human use.

Studied for (literature interest)

  • Gut injury models (preclinical)
  • Tendon and ligament damage models (preclinical)
  • Muscle injury and wound-healing models (preclinical)
  • Interest in sports-medicine literature driven by preclinical findings — not large human trials

Cautions (educational)

  • Not FDA-approved for any human indication.
  • FDA has listed BPC-157 among bulk substances that may present significant safety risks for compounding (limited human safety data, immunogenicity concerns for some routes, peptide purity characterization challenges).
  • July 2026 PCAC advisory vote recommended listing related bulk substances on the 503A Bulks List; the vote is advisory only and FDA staff had recommended against inclusion. Final rulemaking was still pending in later 2026 reporting.
  • Animal results do not automatically translate to safe or useful effects in people.
