Investigational — hepcidin mimetic for PV — not approved.
What it's for
Rusfertide is an still being studied peptide mimetic of hepcidin.
What it does for the body
Studied to reduce iron availability and phlebotomy need in polycythemia vera. Not approved. In plain terms: researchers may study it, but that does not make it an approved everyday medicine in the U.S.
What it targets
Hepcidin pathway activation traps iron in stores by degrading ferroportin, limiting red-blood-cell production fuel. Researchers map these ideas in cells and animals first; human proof has to clear a higher bar.
Research context
Bottom line for readers: Rusfertide is still being studied in people. Watch for peer-reviewed trial readouts and regulator decisions — not just social-media summaries.
